The 2024–25 edition of the African Achievement Awards brought together a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, celebrities, community leaders, and global influencers in a grand celebration of African excellence, innovation, and leadership. Held at the elegant Seattle Airport Marriott, this year’s awards ceremony transcended tradition, marking a powerful moment of cross-cultural recognition and civic pride as both local and international guests were welcomed to the city of SeaTac, Washington.

A hallmark of this year’s ceremony was the active participation of elected officials from across Washington State, whose presence affirmed the importance of diversity, representation, and community engagement within the African diaspora.

Among the esteemed speakers was Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands, Dave Upthegrove, who delivered a moving keynote address, emphasizing the significance of uplifting marginalized voices and celebrating cultural contributions from the African continent. Commissioner Franz acknowledged the achievements of African immigrants and first-generation Americans in shaping Washington’s economy, culture, and future. Her presence highlighted a shared commitment to inclusion, sustainability, and progress.

Warm Welcome from SeaTac Mayor Mohamed Egal

Mayor Mohamed Egal, the first Somali-American mayor in Washington State, extended an official welcome on behalf of the City of SeaTac. In his remarks, Mayor Egal commended the African Achievement Awards for providing a platform that honors excellence in leadership, entrepreneurship, education, the arts, and public service. He praised the initiative for fostering community engagement and cultural appreciation, while also welcoming guests from across the United States and Africa into the heart of SeaTac.

“Tonight, we not only celebrate individual achievement—we celebrate our collective power to uplift communities and inspire future generations,” said Mayor Egal.

 Distinguished Elected Officials in Attendance

In addition to the keynote and mayoral remarks, the evening was honored by the attendance of several high-ranking elected officials and policymakers who have championed equity and diversity in Washington State:

  • Senator Tina Orwall, known for her advocacy in mental health, education, and social justice, celebrated the evening alongside community members.

  • State Representative Mia Gregerson, a vocal supporter of immigrant rights and inclusive governance, delivered remarks emphasizing the value of cultural representation in public policy.

  • Councilmember Brenda Fincher of Kent City Council highlighted the contributions of African professionals and businesses in local development.

  • Councilmember John Boyd, also from Kent City Council, echoed sentiments of unity and congratulated honorees for their resilience and impact.

Numerous other government representatives, including city officials, educators, and nonprofit leaders, joined in solidarity—underscoring the recognition that African excellence is American excellence.

 A Celebration of Culture, Contribution, and Community

The African Achievement Awards have become a signature event in the Pacific Northwest, celebrating African immigrants and descendants for their remarkable accomplishments across industries including business, education, entertainment, media, public service, and philanthropy.

Organized by Channel A TV under the leadership of Dr. Davies Chirwa, the awards not only spotlight individual success stories but also bridge communities and generations. The red-carpet affair included musical performances, international guest speakers, and emotional award presentations that captured the spirit of resilience and ambition that defines the African diaspora.
